NSP has been accepting applications since 1 June 2026. As of 30 October 2026, 90,483 fresh and 1,99,531 renewal applications had been submitted.
Why Was the Date Extended?
According to the Ministry, the extension gives eligible students extra time to complete applications on NSP and helps the concerned authorities verify them on time. In simple terms: submitting the form is only step one. A form that is not verified by the school and the district officer will not move forward.
What Is NMMSS?
NMMSS is a Central Sector Scheme launched in 2008. Its aim is to reduce dropouts after Class VIII by giving financial support to talented students from economically weaker families, so they can continue studying up to Class XII. The scheme is funded by the Central Government and the money goes directly to the student's bank account through DBT.
Who Is Eligible for NMMSS?
1. Marks in Class VII
At least 55% marks (or equivalent grade) in Class VII to appear in the selection test. SC/ST students get a 5% relaxation, so 50% is enough.
2. Family income
Parental income must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh per year.
3. Type of school
The student must study in a state government school, government-aided school, or a school run by a local body.
4. Selection test
The scholarship is awarded only to students who qualify in the selection test conducted by their State/UT government. The test usually has two parts: the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Only after qualifying do students apply on NSP.
Common confusion: The state exam and the NSP application are two steps of the same process, not two different scholarships. Clearing the exam alone does not give you the money. You must also apply on NSP.
How Is NMMSS Different from Other Scholarships?
It is a merit-cum-means scheme: both marks and family income matter.
Seats are limited (1 lakh fresh scholarships a year), distributed across states.
It supports students for four years (Class IX to XII) if renewal conditions are met.
NMMSS Renewal: How to Keep the Scholarship Till Class XII
Fresh selection happens in Class IX. After that, the student must apply for renewal every year on NSP and meet the academic conditions:
Clear promotion in the first attempt (no compartment/supplementary).
Minimum marks as per the scheme guidelines. As per the official revised guidelines, 60% in Class X is a key condition, with relaxation for SC/ST students. Many state education pages also mention 55% in Classes IX and XI.
Continue studying in an eligible government/aided/local body school.
Renewal rules have been revised over the years and can differ in how states communicate them, so check the latest official guidelines on the NSP/Ministry website.
Documents Students Should Keep Ready
As per the NSP FAQ, documents are generally not uploaded on the portal. They are submitted to the school for verification after the online application. Keep these ready:
Class VII marksheet
Parental income certificate
Caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC, if applicable)
Disability certificate (if applicable)
Domicile certificate
Aadhaar-linked bank account details (account should be in the student's name and active for DBT)
The exact list can vary slightly by state and school. Ask your school nodal officer for the final checklist.

Take a printout or screenshot of the final submission.
Submit your documents to the school and follow up with the Institute Nodal Officer (L1).

Mistakes That Can Delay or Cancel Your Application
Entering wrong bank account number or IFSC (DBT will fail)
Bank account not linked/active for DBT
Mismatch of name or date of birth between marksheet, Aadhaar and form
Submitting the form but not following up for verification
Waiting for the last day, when the portal gets slow
What Should Students Who Have Already Applied Do?
Check application status on NSP.

Ask whether L1 verification is "verified" or still "pending".
If the form is returned with a defect, correct it immediately.
