Earlier this week, in the Middle East, the 1st case of Monkeypox was reported in Israel.

Monkeypox suspected, confirmed in 19 Countries:

According to Reuters, about 237 cases (either suspected or confirmed) have been found in 19 countries since early May. The disease is endemic to Africa, however, the people who have not traveled to Africa are also found to be affected. The majority of the infections have been found in Europe.

According to the scientists, the risk of the general population getting diseased by Monkeypox is however low because the disease does not spread as easily as it was in the case of SARS-COV-2. Thus, it is not expected to be converted into a pandemic like Covid-19.

    Monkeypox Disease Outbreak not normal:

On Tuesday, WHO said that an outbreak of the disease can be contained outside Africa.

Reuters quoted Sylvie Brand, who is the director of Global Infectious Hazard Preparedness of WHO, saying that, it is being encouraged to increase Monkeypox surveillance so that the status of transmission level can be known and understood.

It was also said that the outbreak was not normal & it was containable.

Treatments & vaccines are there for the disease as said by Briand. However, more research, appropriate containment measures & global collaboration is required.

While speaking in Geneva at the World Health Assembly, she said, not to make a mountain out of a molehill.

    About the Monkeypox Virus:

Monkeypox is a virus that belongs to the same family as Smallpox. It originates generally in rodents & primates and then jumps occasionally to humans. Most cases among humans have been found in West Africa and Central Africa. However, the cases are limited.

Scientists first identified it in the year 1958 in research monkeys, who had diseases similar to the pox. Hence, they named it Monkeypox. The first human being to get affected was a young boy belonging to a remote part of the Congo in the year 1970.

What is the reason for the recent outbreak?

It was said by a top advisor of WHO that the reason for the outbreak was sexual activity at the 2 recent raves in Europe.

It was said by Dr. David Heymann, the chairman of the expert advisory group on infectious hazards, that, Monkeypox can spread in case of close contact with an already infected person. He has also said that sexual contact seems to multiply the transmission.

The authorities of countries like Spain, Germany, Britain & Portugal say that in Europe maximum cases were seen among men having sex with other men. However, according to experts, close contact with an infected person can affect another person.

According to the scientists, it is still difficult to determine about the correctness of the reasons for the spread.

Reasons for the men having sex with other men, and being infected:

The reason is yet unknown, however, gay or bisexual men are found to be infected more than other people.

The PTI news agency quoted an infectious diseases researcher at Oxford University, Dr. Jake Dunning, saying that, this fact can just be an unlucky matter that the disease occurred in a particular community first.

He said that it is just that the disease, is spreading in a particular group. Some experts have warned that it is necessary to stop the outbreak at the earliest.

A US Scientist said that, though Monkeypox is spreading among gay or bisexual men right now, however, it can definitely spread among other groups too if not stopped.

    Symptoms of the Monkeypox Disease:

    The symptoms include-

    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Fatigue
    • Body Ache

People with a serious illness might have symptoms like-

    • Rash
    • Lesions on the face & hands
    • The lesions can spread to other body parts too

The recovery period is of around 2 to 4 weeks without the need of being hospitalized. Upto 6 percent of the cases can be fatal & can be severe in children.

    The number of Monkeypox cases:

In a dozen of African countries, thousands of infections of Monkeypox were reported every year, according to the WHO, among which, most cases are in Congo (around 6000 cases). In Nigeria, around 3000 cases are being reported yearly.

Outside Africa, isolated cases of the disease have been found in the past, which includes US & Britain. The cases are found to be related to travel in Africa or contact with animals in disease-prone areas.

In 6 US states, 47 people had probable or confirmed cases in the year 2003. The virus was reportedly caught from the pet prairie dogs which have been housed in Ghana near the imported small mammals.
