The LPG e-KYC process is now mandatory for all domestic cooking gas consumers in India, as directed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Biometric Aadhaar authentication — known as e-KYC — can be completed entirely from home using the mobile apps of oil marketing companies along with the Aadhaar FaceRD application. This directive comes amid elevated LPG refill bookings linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict, even as the government has confirmed that fuel and cooking gas supplies across the country remain stable.

LPG e-KYC refers to the electronic Know Your Customer process where a domestic LPG connection holder verifies their identity using Aadhaar-based facial biometrics. The purpose is to authenticate the genuine beneficiary of the subsidised cooking gas connection. The Ministry announced this requirement via an official post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasising that the process is now accessible without visiting a distributor or service centre.

How to Complete LPG Aadhaar e-KYC from Home

Apps Required by LPG Provider

Each of the three major oil marketing companies has a dedicated mobile application for this process. Consumers must install the correct app based on their LPG provider and combine it with the Aadhaar FaceRD application. All apps are available on both Android and iOS platforms.

Step-by-Step e-KYC Process

Step 1: Install the mobile app of your LPG provider and also install the Aadhaar FaceRD app on your smartphone.

Step 2: Register or log in to the app using the mobile number linked to your LPG connection.

Step 3: Select the e-KYC option from within the app.

Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number and grant permission for biometric authentication.

Step 5: Complete face authentication through the Aadhaar FaceRD app.

Once authentication is successful, the system will confirm completion of the e-KYC process and the LPG connection will be updated accordingly. Consumers who face difficulty can contact their local LPG distributor or call the toll-free helpline number for assistance.

LPG Supply Situation: What the Government Said

The government confirmed in its daily assessment that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or cooking gas, and that all domestic refineries are operating at high capacity with adequate crude oil inventories. Oil marketing companies have reported no dry-outs at fuel retail outlets or LPG distributorships.

LPG refill bookings, which had surged to around 88.8 lakh amid initial panic-buying, have since dropped to approximately 77 lakh, indicating that the early rush has begun to normalise. Online bookings have risen sharply to around 87% from just 8%, a shift attributed to a campaign by oil marketing companies encouraging digital booking and discouraging panic visits to dealerships.

PNG Households Barred from Domestic LPG Connections

In a related regulatory change, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a notification on March 14, amending the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2000 under the Essential Commodities Act. Under the amended rules, households that already have a piped natural gas (PNG) connection must immediately surrender their domestic LPG connections. They will no longer be allowed to take refills from government oil companies or their distributors, and oil marketing companies are barred from providing new LPG connections or refilling cylinders for such consumers.
