SBI Clerk Selection Process 2026

The selection process for Junior Associates consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination
  2. Main Examination
  3. Local Language Proficiency Test

There is no interview in the SBI Clerk recruitment.

Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Examination are shortlisted for the Main Examination. Final selection is based primarily on performance in the Main Examination, subject to fulfilling the other recruitment conditions and qualifying the applicable language requirement.

The Main Examination will carry 200 marks.

How Is the Final SBI Clerk Merit List Prepared?

The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are not added to the final merit list.

The Main Examination plays the key role in determining final merit, subject to the candidate meeting the other eligibility conditions and qualifying the applicable Local Language Proficiency Test.

The merit list is prepared State-wise and category-wise.

SBI Clerk Local Language Proficiency Test

The local language requirement is one of the most important things candidates should understand before applying.

A candidate must be proficient in the specified local language of the State/UT selected in the application. Proficiency generally involves the ability to read, write, speak and understand the language.

For example, Hindi is the specified language for Rajasthan, while candidates applying for Tamil Nadu need proficiency in Tamil.

Candidates who have studied the specified local language in Class 10 or Class 12 and can produce the required certificate or marksheet may be exempted from appearing separately for the language test.

SBI Clerk Salary 2026

The SBI Junior Associate post offers an attractive salary structure.

The pay scale is:

₹24,050 – ₹64,480

The starting Basic Pay for a graduate Junior Associate is ₹26,730, which includes two advance increments available to graduates.

At a metro location such as Mumbai, the approximate starting monthly emoluments are around ₹46,000, including applicable allowances. The actual amount can vary depending on the place of posting.

Selected employees are also eligible for various benefits and facilities according to SBI rules.

SBI Clerk Job Profile

A Junior Associate is primarily involved in customer-facing banking work.

The job may include:

  • Handling customer support activities
  • Providing routine banking services
  • Assisting customers with banking products
  • Handling customer queries
  • Making customer calls
  • Supporting sales of banking and financial products
  • Providing basic information about banking services
  • Working inside or outside the branch when required

Candidates should therefore understand that the SBI Clerk role is not limited to desk work. It can involve customer interaction and sales-support responsibilities as well.

SBI Clerk Probation Period

Newly appointed Junior Associates remain on probation for a minimum of six months.

During this period, employees have to complete the e-learning modules prescribed by SBI. The probation period may be extended if the required modules are not completed or the employee does not meet the Bank’s performance requirements.

SBI Clerk Preparation Strategy 2026

Candidates have limited time before the tentative September Preliminary Examination, so preparation should be focused.

For the Prelims, candidates should work on speed and accuracy in English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning. Regular mock tests are particularly useful because each section has a separate time limit.

At the same time, candidates should not completely ignore Mains preparation. General and Financial Awareness requires consistent revision, while Quantitative Aptitude, English and Reasoning need regular practice.

A balanced preparation plan would include:

  • Daily reasoning practice
  • Regular numerical ability questions
  • English reading and grammar practice
  • Banking and financial awareness
  • Full-length mock tests
  • Previous-year question practice
  • Regular revision of weak areas
